Zweite überarbeitete Ausgabe. – Freeman 801. – Berühmtes Werk, das die Selektionstheorie von Charles Darwin fortführt und erstmals 1762 erschien. Darwin sieht in der eindrucksvollen Vielfalt der Orchideenblüten eine Anpassung an die Bestäubung durch Insekten. Die hier vorliegende zweite Ausgabe wurde von ihm umfassend erweitert und überarbeitet. „The work has thus been remodelled; and the additions and corrections are so numerous that I have found it impossible to follow my usual plan of giving a list of them… Finally, I will remark that any reader who wishes merely to see how wonderfully complex and perfect are the adaptations for the fertilisation of these plants had better read Chapter VII. on the Catasetidae.“ (Preface). – Minimal fleckig, etwas gelockert.
