Originalleinen mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel und Rückenvergoldung, (etwas beschabt und bestoßen, Rücken unterlegt).

Erste Ausgabe. – Nissen, ZBI 4095. – Der Autor, Sir James Emerson Tennent (1794-1869) war in der Zeit von 1845-50 Kolonialsekretär und danach Gouverneur auf Ceylon. „Er schuf das erste allumfassende Werk über die Insel auf Grundlage seiner eigenen Reisen und der schon mächtig angeschwollenden, auch alten Literatur.“ (Henze 5, 297). – Eine der ersten großen Abhandlungen über die Zoologie Sri Lankas. Mit einer umfassenden Abhandlung über den Elefanten. – Es fehlt die Tafel „Saw of the Saw-Fish“. – Gering fleckig, etwas eng gebunden.
